About

Theatrical Futures: Intensive Study in NYC

Theatrical Futures is a five-day intensive program that introduces students to some of New York City’s most important creators working at the intersection of live performance and technology. The program is tailored to the academic courses and interests of students. They visit artists’ studios, research laboratories, creative incubators, and performance venues for a firsthand look inside New York’s hotbed of innovation. Students have the opportunity to present their own work to professionals and receive critiques and advice.

Theatrical Futures focuses on the future of live performance and its ongoing transformation in relationship to rapidly changing information and interactive technologies. Through a series of intimate conversations with New York artists and researchers, accompanied by studio and lab visits, performances and walking tours, students discover a wide range of exciting artistic languages and new strategies for engaging audiences. These include installation, multi-media opera, software generated music, biogenetic art, virtual reality, robotics, video gaming, architecture and other non-human systems. Students will also have the opportunity to meet artists working in traditional forms of contemporary dance, theater and visual arts.
