[Video] the sensation of AI

Above: Pixels Wave 2015, generative and interactive virtual-reality installation, in collaboration with Carolyn Kan and Depression was presented at the Singapore Night Festival, National Design Center, Singapore, August 21-29, 2015.

Chevalier’s spectacular interactive generative art gives the sensation of interacting with new nature and artificial intelligence. His experimental and multi-disciplinary work explores recurrent themes such as nature and artifice, flows and networks, virtual cities and ornate designs.

Since 1978, Miguel Chevalier has focused exclusively on computers as an artistic means of expression. He quickly secured a spot on the international scene as a pioneer of virtual and digital art. Chevalier continues to be a trailblazer, and has proven himself one of the most significant artists on the contemporary scene.

Miguel Chevalier’s oeuvre is experimental and multidisciplinary. His sources lie in the history of art and his work explores recurrent themes such as nature and artifice, flows and networks, virtual cities and ornate designs. In the 1980s, Miguel Chevalier began tackling the question of the hybrid and generative image.

His interactive generative artworks give visitors the sensation of interacting with new nature and artificial intelligence.

Miguel Chevalier, “Tapis Magiques” 2014 Casablanca video by Claude Mossessian

At the former Sacré Coeur Church in Casablanca, Morocco, is an interactive light display that covers the floor with a huge layer of light. The work references the world of biology, microorganisms, and cellular automata – as cells have the ability to multiply in abundance, divide and merge at different paces. pieces come together, fall apart and transform in shape at rapid speeds. The displayed organic universe mingles with a digital construction of overlapping pixels.

Utsikten Kunstsenter in Kvinesdal, Norway, Directed by Torill Haugen, presented a solo exhibition of interactive artwork from Miguel Chevalier’s “Power Pixels” 2014 collection. Among them was “Fractal Flowers” a immersive 30 ft x 20 ft (9m x 6m) projection of a virtual garden that generates giant flowers in different sizes, colors and shapes and interacts with viewers. The music score by Jacopo Baboni Schilingi also interacts with viewers’ movements.

Thursday March 20. 7:00 p.m. Vernissage

Friday March 21 – Miguel Chevalier presentation and meeting with artists
On view through April 27

“Fractal Flowers” is immersive generative artwork that responds to the movement of visitors and gives the sensation of communicating with new nature and artificial intelligence.

Torill Haugen, Director of the Utsikten Kunstsenter
, a core partner of Streaming Museum, has created an art center for art and technology located in the south of Norway, in Kvinesdal. The center was established in 2008 by the municipality of Kvinesdal to bring bring new awareness of the field of art and technology to this region. Utsikten Kunstsenter is located outside of urban areas on a mountainside with a view of the fjord. The name Utsikten is translated “the view.” Both artists and audiences have been attracted to the contrast and connections between electronic art and nature that takes place in a unique way in this dramatic natural setting where one feels the force of nature.
